Sticky Hands, a new song by Miss Phoebe

sticky hands
I play guitar. Phoebe sings silly songs. Sometimes she makes up her own. That’s all in a typical day for us.

My friend, Joy, challenged me. “You need to record your songs!” she said, “They are amazing! You need to save them!”

I never felt the urgency of saving these moments before.

Donny (Joy’s husband) caught my attention in the kitchen, “Your voice reminds me of grandma Beth. I never realized until later in life how much I loved to hear her sing.”

I knew my songs were special to Phoebe, but I never thought about how important they might one day become to her, once she is grown up.

Later, chatting on the couch, Joy shared with me, “My mom used to sing and play guitar.  Then she stopped playing. When she grew older, she picked up her guitar to play the same songs, but her voice had changed.”

I never thought about capturing my music before I change, and it changes with me.

“You keep your music as this secret thing,” Joy said. “I never knew you played guitar. I never knew you and Phoebe made up songs. You have kept it special and sacred, but you should open up and share it more. It’s beautiful and it could bring so much joy to others.”

My music is a gift that I’ve been taking for granted.

Then I saw my music through the eyes of Joy and Donny’s kids: how Gracie was mesmerized, how Brandon felt every word, how Clementine danced around the room with Phoebe, how Mabel lit up with joy. And, finally, I saw my own little Phoebe with new eyes, how much my music fills her with joy, how dancing and singing is the language of her soul.

“Does Phoebe dance like this every time you play?” Joy asked me.

“Yes,” I replied, surprised. It never occurred to me that life could be any different.

I didn’t consider my music to be anything extraordinary. I didn’t think much about the silly songs that me and Phoebe share. But maybe I should start. One of my mottoes, after all, is that I search for eternal beauty in ordinary moments. Why should these simple songs be any different?

So I will pull down the curtains, and welcome you into this little corner of our home. Would you share these songs with me?

Here’s a little diddy Miss Phoebe came up with tonight, with a tiny edit from me. ^_^ You can even see us discussing the edit in the video, when she interrupts me “because I’m doing it wrong.” Maybe I’ll even record an audio file so you can download it. I hope you enjoy singing along!

Sticky Hands (lyrics)

Sticky hands! Sticky hands!
They don’t have to matter!

Sticky hands! Sticky hands!
You can wash up with soap and water!

Sticky hands! Sticky hands!
If you clean up you can play with Mama!

Sticky hands! Sticky hands!
Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah! Blah!

^_^ Erin

i know it’s just a tv show, but the acting was so beautiful that i saw the moment they were going for:
a mother is comforting her very pregnant daughter and she sings Joni Mitchell’s The Circle Game while strumming a guitar. It was so clear this was a reliving of a childhood moment.

This is sort of what I imagine when grown Phoebe sees these videos again and remembers her special years at home with mama.

Thanks for sharing with the rest of us.

Oh thank you for sharing how this post makes you feel. It means a lot to me.

I think it’s so easy to get caught up in the Everyday that I sometimes forget to stop and just appreciate who we are and who we have become, both individually and to each other.

I like that our songs afford that opportunity for me and Miss Phoebe.

Erin! I love this! We are making up songs and singing all day long. I wish I knew how to play guitar, or had enough room to get us a piano. Music making with little ones is the best. I love your voice and your amazing attitude. <3

Oh this makes my heart so happy! I’d love to hear some of your songs! ^_^ If you ever record them, let me know. >_< I've just been using the voice memo function on my phone.
